On May 29th the Indianapolis 500 will celebrate a significant milestone—the 100th running of this iconic race. Chevrolet is pleased to be a part of this monumental occasion by having a special 50th Anniversary Camaro SS lead the race as the pace car.
This will be the ninth time a Camaro has served as pace car and the 27th time overall for Chevrolet. Making it even more significant is the fact that the pace car will be driven by motorsport legend Roger Penske.
“Chevrolet and the Indianapolis 500 have a long, storied history and it’s an honor to mark the respective milestones of the Indy 500 race and the Camaro simultaneously,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development and Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, in a statement. “It’s also a privilege to have Roger Penske perform the driving duties, as his team has helped Chevrolet earn four consecutive IndyCar manufacturer titles since 2012.”
There will be four identical pace cars to support the race. The Camaro SS pace car won’t need any performance modifications since it will have 455 horsepower at its disposal. It will be painted in a unique Abalone White color with “100th Running of the Indianapolis 500” graphics on the doors and Indianapolis Motor Speedway logos on the quarter panels.
While regular customers won’t be able to purchase this unique pace car, the official 2017 Chevrolet Camaro SS 50th Anniversary Edition will go on sale this summer.
If you watch the Indy 500 later this month, be on the lookout for this unique Camaro pace car.
